The bell tower in Fornbyn in summer

Next to the museum is the idyllic open air museum Fornbyn. Here you find about 30 buildings from all over Västergötland, moved here to illustrate life in Sweden's agrarian society. You can visit a general store, a smithy, several torp, barns and an old wooden church.

There are also two rare types of windmills here, a sawmill and a multi-functional (both a saw and a grain mill) "holkkvarn" (roof mill), where the wings and mechanics of the mill are mounted in a tower on top of the building. The tower is mounted on a wooden drum (the "holk") which can be rotated to face the wind.
