Ester Henning was an artist who spent most of her life in various mental hospitals, yet despite this created a unique collection of artworks. Västergötlands museum is currently hosting an exhibition that tells the story of her life and artistic career. Around twenty works by Ester Henning have been loaned from Skövde Art Museum and are on display in the exhibition.
On the morning of 17 April 1916, there was a tense atmosphere at the police station on Stora Nygatan in Gamla Stan. At 8.30 am, a young woman had been brought to the station, arrested for behaving violently towards a constable at Riddarhustorget.
The woman was the 28-year-old artist Ester Mathilda Henning, who had told the constable that she had been attacked and knocked to the ground by an unknown man on Vasabron. When, during the questioning in the square, another man approached them, she had “immediately punched the man in the face”. Constable Jansson was also struck across the nose. She
